Well somewhere along the way I lost my lens cap and ordered two of them as replacements. While shopping for them I came across this white balance lens cap. Anyone ever use one? If so could you let me know how. The instructions are kind of vague.

I've never personnally used one. In fact, first I've heard of them (that's how new I am to photography). Here's a review I found on this supporting that it's a good buy:

There are probably others out there that state different, but in my quick search, I found more positives, than negatives.

Thanks AG. Very interesting. I just have to read my manual now to set a custom white balance setting.

PS: I didnt know they existed either.

Let us know how you find it, once you figure it out. I'll have to check out our local photography stores and see what they have. I thought owning a Harley was hard on the bank account (everytime I go in the dealership, I spend money). With photography, I can feel my bank account dwindling even more.... Oh well, you can't take it with you, right?

I will Lil.

I was reading my manual on the D90 and found two interesting custom white balance settings.

One is using this device or a white or gray card and the other is that you can use a known good white balance pic on the CF card as a reference.

I'll have to play with these features in the near future.

My Canon has the same two custom options. I'm guessing you would use the photo taken with the cap on as the good white balance pic???

I read that these are especially helpful when your camera does not take RAW photos, but does allow for white balance adjustment.

Well with RAW it is said that the white balance can be changed after the picture is taken without degrading the image but I would like to do it the old fashioned way...LOL

I believe so Lil. I havent done it yet but I guess the one method provides for the second option as you said.

I guess you could load your two flower shots back onto your card and have two nice refrences to go by.

You may be on to something...using custom WB. It can been such a challenging issue around here in lake country. Find something that works and keep it...hmmmnnnnn.....
