I went to a shop the other day to check out some cameras I'm considering. Whoa! These things were heavy. I was really surprised at the weight of the DSLRs. They didn't have a D300 in stock, so I looked at the D700 and D90 for comparison. Coming from a guy that shot mostly manual, I have to say, there seems to be a big learning curve on these cameras. I also checked out the Canon 5DMkII. Seems to be the choice nowadays for wedding photographers. I'm still leaning towards the Nikon, but am seriously considering the Canon now, too. I need to do more research. Man this is complicated.

Dave, here is my favorite site for beginning to sort such challenges out: Digital Photography Review. (http://www.dpreview.com/)
There are many good insights available from the folks here. I cannot wait to learn what is offered.

Thanks, Lil. I've already been there and read through a number of reviews on cameras. Next I'm going to read lens reviews as that will be a big deciding factor. One thing that leans me towards the Nikon is they have a highly praised 300mm f/4. I don't think Canon has anything like it.

Dave~ Just went through this. In the end, I added a D 700-- with the battery pack, and the 80/400 lens installed, something over 7 pounds. BUT-- you get used to it, and the weight does help. Funny thing, for a strap, I had a two shoulder straps my wife took off a couple LL BEAN bags she bought last year. They work GREAT. Oh yeah, I never throw ANYTHING away.:D:D
The ONLY problem I have with the D 700, is the fact there are no mid range zooms by Nikon that will work on it.My 18/200 DX would be wasted on the 700, and I haven't figured out what FX lens from Nikon would be close. I use the 18/200 a LOT.??

When I first started using the D90 I got a terrible pain in my shoulder and neck just from taking pictures. Like JR said in just a short while I didnt even notice I was carrying it.

The D40, 60, & 90 are featherweights compared to the D200, 300, & 700.

Yeah, I'd swear that D700 was as heavy as my Hasselblad.

I see. I have never handled the pro cameras. I do however have a larger than stock lens for about 7 lbs of weight total I think.
