Thats funny, I have the ST-E2 and both the 550 and a couple of 580's but we use them all the time. The ST-E2 works so well if you have to shoot something and only have a limited space to set up lights.

never tried the ST-E2 I was also considering going with the pocket wizard (http://www.pocketwizard.com/), but being that i need additional flashes, the price is beyond me at this point.

Here is a photo taken with an ST-E2 control and a remote 580EX flash. It gives you the advantage to hold the flash anyplace you like so that you can actually use the shadows to create almost illusions. In this photo it makes the gun look like it is floating because the flash is above and behind the gun when the picture was taken.
