I was just farting around with our video camera when I realized something odd......like it uses video tape. Any recomendations for a good entry level digi setup?? What sort of things should I be looking for or maybe looking out for?

One thing that was important to me was that it needed to have a DV cable so my editing software could control it for in and out marks. Otherwise editing just sucks!

Also personally today I would go for a HD camera. I am still waiting for them to come down a bit in price. But non-HD just seems like a waste of money these days.

Next big factor would be number of CCDs I would guess.

You must be looking at the 3 CCD cameras. Are you trying to become Lux's camera man?

You can get a Canon VIXIA 3.3MP HD Digital Camcorder with Flash Memory for $899.

You can get the HG10 (HDD) for under $700 now.

I guess I have to get over the removable lens requirement, eh?

I find a big part of actually using a video camera is size and weight. If it is too big and bulky it will suck to drag it around with you. So I say ya, unless you are thinking of going weekend pro or something... drop the removable lens.

I have this bad prejudice against fixed lens cameras being "cheap" or low quality. I know..I know....

CBM, I did A LOT of research before landing on this particular model. It has a small form-factor which is really nice, too.
