I'm interested in a reliable small tripod and would love to hear what people have to say on the topic.

Small = Unsteady....
What will you be putting on it and what's your budget.

I picked up a Velbon a little while ago when someone broke into Christine's car and stole my Manfrotto tripod and monopod!

Everytime I use that flimsy thing I get pissed off at those thieves. I have a hard time justifying another Manfrotto, but at the same time they last a life time.

They have lighter weight carbon fiber ones as well. I keep looking at them on EBay but they never seem to go for the price I want to pay. :(

For what camera and what use? I had a very small tripod for a point and shoot that was slightly better than nothing and got in the way all the time.

If you're planning on a dual-use (still and video), MAKE SURE you get one which has a very smooth lateral turn action. Otherwise, when you pan, it can be jerky and the mic might pick up the squeaking noise. I have an el cheapo tripod now with that problem and am about to dump it for quality.

I do not recall the make of the one I lost in the fire, but it would collapse down to about 10" or 12" tall and expand out to about 3'. It was lightweight and sturdy. I never had problems with it becoming unstable. I am not into video so this is for still use only. My camera is a Nikon Coolpix 5700.
