View Full Version : Fuzzy Babies

The babies are in abundance these days. This small family
seemed to be enjoying themselves at the pond this afternoon.

Papa was a bit nervous while they were on land and folks were approaching.

It still feels like cheating.

Lil, after messing with it wouldn't you agree it takes just as much creativity and talent to produce a good PP result?

I thought of it as cheating at first but have since changed my mind. It's merely another tool for the photographer. It is accepted in the old film world with dodging and burning and the color settings on the enlarger to name a few.

Anyway you take a mean shot! I cant believe how quickly you got your mojo back after your photographic absence that you have spoken about. Very nice shots!

A little less messy is all and when it is said and done you have a photograph that is studied not just looked at:D

Tell me about it! That watchful Papa, I think, was loudly hissing at anyone who got too close. The one I think was Mama stood right near the babies.

You are very kind.

I did tell you about that, didn't I? http://www.moviephotoforums.com/photopost/data/532/laugh.gif

Okay, so you both have cornered me. I've done them all. It is just that this seems like so much more than that. The part that is making me feel a bit better about it is how many photography contests either allow or encourage PP. That is like a swat with a two by four between the eyes. PP is a part of contemporary photography. If it weren't why would RAW exist?

If I want to be a part of this day, I better take on the challenge you speak of Ed.

They are perfect practice pictures for me too. The babies are a challenge because they move so darned fast and the mature goose has shadow, contrast, and exposure problems all associated with the head. Get the eye and lose the under and side of the head white. Get the eye and the white and the front of the head is a mass of nondescript black. Oh, and did I mention the bill? http://www.moviephotoforums.com/photopost/data/532/laugh.gif

I've heard it said that photography is anticipation. So, I sat there with a finger on the shutter release waiting to see if anyone would do anything. When those two popped their heads up I nearly fell over. How I managed to press the shutter release and make that photograph is beyond me. That is why it is my favorite.

Now for a genuine answer.
(I hope you truly wanted one. http://www.moviephotoforums.com/photopost/data/532/Blushing_Smiley.gif)

That is another photograph I made while lying flat on the ground. The perfect spot is one with a tree to lie close to or a point in the grass lower than where the animals are at the time. As the tripod tends to spook them these shots have to be hand held. My typical position is right hand on the camera body holding it close to my eye and the left on the base of the body with index and middle finger extended to brace the 70-300mm. My elbows and upper torso become the tripod. Too much pressure on the body of the lens will certainly interfere with AF so a good deal of care must be taken. Focus is always centered upon the eye of one gosling or another.

Everyday the gosling are moving more and more quickly, so I've resorted to using the sports setting to stop the action letting the camera take care of the rest. If I'm not using the sports setting, then Shutter Speed is high and priority. AF is set to AI Servo mode because of the quick starts and stops they constantly make. IS is set to Mode 2.

Saturation is set to +2. If I could boost in more I would because in this regard Kodachrome slides rock in comparison. That is what most of my 35mm photos were made using.

Here is one without any PP whatsoever. It entered PSE only to have my sig stamp put on.

The parents are less and less bothered by my presence. I can now walk nearby without all of the families heading immediately into the pond. My approach still has to be as if I'm not interested in them. Walking directly at them is not received well at all.

I like that idea! Do you think it needs any further explanation? I have a feeling folks would ask just exactly do we mean. Since it might be hard to find cooperative water nymphs I might try to compose a photograph that allows the viewer to insight into my inspiration. Am I on the right track?

Just call Lil "the duck lady"!

They see you so often, they're becoming conditioned, :). Or maybe "Pavlov" is more appropriate.

You may be right John. This one was watchful, but not very concerned as I drew close.

No, never bread. They eat it, then they drink water. The bread then swells up and they feel satisfied. They then do not eat their normal vegetarian fair and suffer from poor nutrition and become unhealthy.
I never feed them. I just try to walk in unobtrusively, which is hard at my size compared to them. You learn not to look right at them and to stand somewhere parallel to where they are looking. Then you can turn toward them with the camera.

The whispering goose stalker.
