Good question, honestly I went with a canon because I found a good deal on it. BUt i think I like the features of the canon i bought over the comparable nikon for the price.
http://www.dpreview.com/ (good camera review site)
But additionally there seems to be more canon owners out there so being a deal seeker, there are more good used lenses to be bought for canon, IMO.
But really, I think the difference will be minuscule, find one you like get used to it and run with it.

Traditionally... Canon seemed to have more lenses, more features and better prices.
Nikon had better glass and durability.
I have no idea if it is still like that today, I'm still living back in the 80's and 90's. :)

That is still pretty much true. I think the colors are slightly processed differently also for the digital (neither are necessarily better just different)

I'm a creature of habit and have loved Nikon for over 30 years. FWIW They've never disappointed me.

I have never had a Canon SLR. I have had my Nikon D70 for four years now and it is still going strong. If I had to guess I have probably taken somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 shots with it. Still as strong as new.
So, I have no experience with Canon to compare it to. My camera is now 4 plus years old and I am torn on which brand to go with. I really do like the quality of Canon, but love my Nikon. I may do a little comparison shopping and try to talk to Canon owners before my next purchase.

I have a Canon Film SLR and video camera. I use a Nikon CP-5700. I would like to get a Canon XTi just so I can use the lenses from my film SLR with it.
The only thing I don't like about the Nikon is that it's very difficult for a knucklehead like me to take low-light shots without the flash. They always come out looking like I have Parkinsons.
When digital first came out Jeannie and I were all Nikon, then came the D1 Nikon. Not a bad camera but man did we have problems with it. It went back in for repairs three times in as many years. We decided to consider canon after so many of Jeannie's counterparts were using the canon with great success so we purchased a 1D Mark II and never looked back. a half million shutter counts on it and still going strong. We also use a 10d, 20d and 30d for backups but the 1d Mark II takes the brunt of the girls photos.

I went Nikon because of the deal i got on a D40 ... in hindsight, and knowing how much i now like taking pictures with a DSLR, I would've gone with the entry-level cannon, as the D40 doesn't have auto-focus in the camera body, making lenses more expensive.

So I went Nikon because I simply didn't know any better. I got intimately involved in photography in the early 70's in high school. The school let us use Pentax camera's but on all the walls of our classroom were Nikon ad's....the message was simple- Pentax is ok for High School kids, but real photographers used Nikons. When I went into the Navy I first bought a Nikkormat and then the Nikon F2.
I swear, that camera got me laid. It was like having a Corvette at that time and photography was very much the trendy thing.
I wanted the Nikon because I wasn't even 20 at the time and very suceptible to advertising and Nikon knew how to push the "Nikon Quality" thing to the limit. I bought a couple of Nikon lenses and were very proud of them. Those of us that bought into the Nikon hype looked at our friends with Canon's as not being "serious" about it all. :D
I remember the first time I messed with a friends F-1 I was "wait a minute, this is a serious tool!".
I'm still slightly polluted with Nikon Loyalty even though intellectually I know better. Funny world, eh?

I went to the Hill Air Force Base Air Museum today and took this picture of the display of cameras out of the SR-71 spy plane. Note the brand, baby! Nuttin but Nikon! :D
