I am a Mac user and am wondering what you folks use to store and organize your photos on your computer. As there are probably many more PC users out there, please do not hesitate to respond if you do not use Mac.

I just recently bought a Hammer external drive. It is 670 GB and cost $89.
After all the most important info to me to save in a crash is photos and music. After I back up my info I disconnect the drive from the computer for additional safety.

External hard drives. Got a good deal a few months ago on Woot.com for two 250GB drives. Will need to move up to something bigger soon. Geeks.com and newgg.com always have great deals on them as well for the PC users. I am not totally sure if they are Mac compliant.
I keep most of them on my local machine, but here is a screen shot of 4 1tb drives running in raid so they mirror and it shows as 2 tb with 700 gb used. If one drive fails it has a mirror copy all the time.

I'm on a PC. I keep the majority of my pictures and other important info on my server in my basement. That way when my computer dies, it's a simple reload and then mapping a drive.

What do you do to provide easy sorting and identification of images?

I use iPhoto, a stock Mac database-like program because it came with the machine. It is pretty good, but will admit to probably not using it to its fullest potential.
