We had a warmer day today, about 21 degrees, so the Yacht Club at Seneca
Lake seemed like a good place to visit to practice winter photography.

Thanks Ed.
Seneca Lake, 38 miles long, is deepest at just over 600 feet and most shallow just under 300 feet. The shore side parts and a bit down its length do freeze, as you can see in these pictures, but the center does not. Because of the size, especially the depth, the lake has history as a Naval training site for submarines and is still an active sonar testing facility.

Jim,
It is cold and when the wind blows it makes being out there to take pictures truly challenging. It is a good thing being a little nuts. :D

Thanks Michael. With the constant winter overcast it was so good to see some sun. I'm finding that it is a challenge to get something other than a dull image.

#2 is my favorite:)
I am going to shoot in Raw mode for shots like these and use DPP that came with the camera to adjust WB and contrast..
Where are the yachts?:D

Mike, that is all such new and unfamiliar territory to me.

Yachts skinny dip which does not work in winter.

It's not that hard Lil just uses a lot more storage space

How do you balance what might be pleasing to the eye and that which is as authentic as you can get to the scene photographed?

Personal taste.
For me trying to maintain the integrity of the shot I look for exposure, contrast and tweak sharpness for example

To illustrate ease of use I just did this in Picasa (free) 3 buttons contrast, warmth and sharpen (little overkill on the warm) but you can see the texture of the feathers.
You can't make a crappy shot look better but you can pull details out on a great shot.
DISCLAIMER
This is not a Picayou shot as shown by watermark shot was Lil's (damn auto watermark).
Here is a shot with crappy exposure but a lot of detail and great Bokeh so to make it a little more dramatic auto fix (for exposure) contrast and slight sharpen (again done with Picasa)

Well maybe not a good example but you see what I mean

Okay, I'm processing this.
Bokeh is so very important, isn't it! In your shot it is in no way distracting and actually bolsters the detail of the foreground.

So, what do you think of these?

Autofix, contrast, and warmth adjustments.

Here is my dilemma; it feels like cheating.
Cheating no..
You are not painting over or necessarily manipulating the photo (like I do with a lot of stuff) you are merely enhancing or extracting detail that is already there..
Again can't make a crappy photo good but you can enhance a great photo:D
