There is even night vision capability. Talk about amazing, momma is ~80' up a tree sleeping and its 36F this morning at the nest! There's a slide show on how they placed the cams, and gives some perspective on "sitting" in the nest. They say the nest weighs approx 1.5 tons.

One baby eaglet in the nest!

I have to go to Commencement for the first part of the day. I bet there are chicks when I come home. What do you think.

Can you get over how she nestled in for a good nights sleep? Amazing how she is seemingly completely undisturbed by the presence of technology.

Been watching off and on all day, started watching at 0500 this morning while drinking my coffee. Saw momma feeding the hatchling in the afternoon from the latest kill. It was so cool to watch the new chick basking in the sunlight while being fed by momma. Definitely addictive, she is such a dedicated mother.

Right now momma's trying to feed one of the chick's meat from a dead bird, but the chick won't eat it. Another reminder of the hard facts, one bird dies so another can live. Sometimes I don't care for the hard facts of nature.

I was so excited this afternoon to see them feeding the two babies. It is amazing how gentle they are and how they ball there feet up to protect them from their talons........the little tucking motion......

Yesterday was a rough night and day for the eagle family, snow and/or rain most of the night and day. It was 37F yesterday morning (same today) when I went to view the nest (~0630) and the cam lens was snowed/iced over. Here is a photo from RRP yesterday showing the mother extending her wings to protect her 3 eaglets from the rain. Wow these birds impress me so! Such a privilege to see into their nest. Btw, the 3 chicks are fine :-)

Great post John. I agree about the privilege. It has been one point of splendor to be able to see them throughout this awful spring. Here are a couple of screen shots from this morning.

Its simply amazing how quickly they are developing; they are starting to resemble eagles. And its only been 5-6 weeks.

polizzio

Good time to go check in on the eaglets, they're starting to look like eagles for real - feathers are developing quickly and their coordination/balance too! Should leave the nest for the first time some time around the last week of June.

Boy, that one's a talker….or should I say a squeak-chirper!

polizzio
05-30-2011, 08:40 AM
Let me tell you the triplets are thinking and talking about it this morning, standing at the edge of their 80' high nest. Talk about a leap of faith, to this point all they have done is eat, sleep, deficate, crow and chirp, and observe the actions of their loyal and faithful parents. Talk about a leap of faith when they take that first plunge from the nest........they don't know for a fact how to fly, nor do they know ANYTHING about the world they just entered. The safety of the home nest.

Scientists write the 1st year survival rate of the eaglets is 50%, fairly grim. The laws of nature in play again.

Diamond Lil
05-30-2011, 02:35 PM
50% that make one take pause.

What is up with the ads??? I see maybe three seconds of eagles and then two ads. It seems to be stuck in a cycle.

polizzio
06-18-2011, 06:48 AM
At least 2 of the eaglets have fledged, now sitting on limbs around the nest versus in the nest. Last Saturday I thought I saw one of the eaglets gone and then fly into the camera view.

Diamond Lil

Wow John! I've not checked in this week. What I missed!

polizzio

A must see video! They captured one of the eaglets and banded her for future tracking/data. Video of her release, also gives a reference to her size after a mere 3 months of life. :thumbsup What an amazing creature! Her voice is so cool.

The advertisements there are a real drag. And the pop-ups........why did they have to exploit it so?
The heron cam is refreshing. No advertisements yet, great video quality, and the lovely sounds and sights of the pond :-)
In the morning, the sounds are music to my ears.
