Would I be really crazy to go out and buy a small P&S like the Canon Elph just for work travel? What precipitated this is I have to go to a meeting in Atlanta next week and I don't want to take my camera with me just because it will really add to my luggage and chances are I would take it and never use it because I would be too busy. But I would like a camera in case I want to take pictures. I would like something really small but I know the pics won't be so great. What do you all think? And if so, what would you recommmend?

Crazy? No way! The pros do it. Why shouldn't you?

I went and had a look but didn't buy. They feel so funny and tiny and you have to watch where you put your fingers.

I also looked at Cokin filters but they didn't have the 3 or 3 stop GND so I all I came home with was a loaf of bread from the bakery 2 doors down!

Bakery bread is good.

I have my little Lumix P&S that goes with me everywhere. I have a purse that I carry all my crap around in and it lives in there. I say go for it.

Thanks Michael. Now to decide on the model. First I have to figure out what I want in this camera. Small and thin is definitely important but then he started trotting out slightly larger versions with more zoom and slightly more features and I got confused.

Nice to know. Good shots. Also good to see a proper photo of you so I can put a face to a name. Mostly its just Nick and the girls in your shots and one far away one from the Chosen Spot trip.

That is probably one of the ones I was looking at. I had an Olympus 3.2 megapixel camera before my DSLR but I gave it away and it was so slow anyway and clunky.

Vanessa, I set up three cameras as food for thought. You can do your own as you wish.

Vanessa~ DO IT!! I picked up a SC50 when they came along, and still have it in my pocket EVERY time I go out the door. One just never knows. :) I can even do a short video with it if need be. In fact I keep it set on that setting and I have a smal table tripod with the feet built in the handle that unscreas to let them out. It makes a great handle to hold while taking a video. Just takes a second to install. :) A lady friend thought it was a good idea and bought a later version. Some guy started playing games one day on the interstate with her, cutting her off, pulling in front of her then slowing down. She got a video of him and the speed she was forced to go and as it turned out the guy had a history of this, and was a real nut case. No way he could say it wasn't him etc. Probably as important as a cell phone. :)

Thanks, Lil. I couldn't see your comparison......it was a black page but that may be a mac/PC thing but checked out the site. Great way to make a comparison.

http://www.moviephotoforums.com/photopost/data/500/medium/me_312.jpgI use a l-18 nikon and they make a l-20 now and got it in walmart and does alot of picture taking at 8 mpixels and get 900 shots on a 2 g card. I use it most of the time and still shoot 35mm film too on a few occasions. This is a shot I took on saturday on a bike ride with my bike with the Nikon l-18.You can see my camera in my hand on the picture of Erin and Me.I went bye walmart yesterday and they make a l-22 nikon pocket camera 12 mpix for 110 dollars.

Well, I'm no expert, But, I couldn't imaging carrying a DSLR everywhere. Having only had mine for a short while, I can tell you that sometimes I think my Sony Cyber does just as well. I had one of my favorite shots taken with that camera printed as an 11x14 print and it looks great. My Son swears by Casio P&S and his camera takes great pictures too. We have a Pentax underwater P&S that we bought for a trip to Hawaii that takes great pictures too.

Yesterday I went out and bought a little camera, the Canon S95.....very small but supposed to have great resolution. It is 10 MP and has a lot of flexibility in terms of adjusting aperture, shutter and ISO and is really small. Now I have to test it out. It was more expensive than I wanted to pay with the extra battery, the memory cards, the case, etc......but hopefully I won't regret it.

Looking it over at dpreview and a few other places, I cannot help but think you made a fine choice for a serious photographer Vanessa. Your expenditure on the extra battery seems wise. When you began speaking of a compact my hope was that you would get one with better low light functionality and boy did you! They have certainly done good things to try to make this one work in that realm. I cannot wait to see what you think!
Happy shooting! :camera
