I've never tried this technique before. Some of the edges could be sharper.

Great effect Lil. I think I remember a Paul Mc Cartney (sp?) album with a pic like that.

Mike,
I do not know what it is called, but can tell you what I did in PSE.
First I made a background copy layer and removed the color. Next I hid the black and white layer. After selecting the colored layer I outlined the crab apples and selected to mask with the selection brush tool. Next I selected the black and white layer and cut the crab apples out and pasted them on to their own layer in case for some reason they are needed. Then I made both layers visible to see the image you see now.

That's too much work Lil. Just select part of the crab apples, Hit ctrl Q for quick mask, and paint in (or erase) what you want to keep. Then select inverse and the selected area should be the area outside the crab apples. Then simply desaturate or select b&w. Voila!

i like the effect, but the technicalities are beyond me.i'm still struggling to master my digital camera, but then i hate reading instuction books. is there a digital camera that works just like a old style film slr? that would suit me fine.
