Greetings from the road. I'm not logging much time for the rest of the week due to my road trip. I've been lucky enough to be able to ride these beauties while here due to the generosity of my host.

Yes I am Mike. When asked if I wanted to ride, instead of saying no thank you, I said let me get my boots on before you change your mind. Nervous is an understatement but man what a thrill to ride these bikes!

Wow Ed! Cool looking machines, but I bet they ride a bit different than the V. How do you like that rake?

Quite a bit different than the v! The rake on the custom is so severe that if you turn the bars too much they will continue going all the way over with some force but if you keep the bars in fairly central area the bike handles well. The 51 pan (now 59 years old) has drum brakes in the front and rear and if youve never ridden one do your self a big favor and dont bother with the inadequate front brakes, go straight to the rear brakes for the ability to stop at all. The rides while exhilarating really made me appreciate the modern engineering of the v.

Truly amazing how people ride those bikes for any distance whatsoever. You have to admire those who do. I'm glad you had the opportunity and enjoyed it Ed. Good for you!:thumbsup

Thanks Lil. After I post ed this thread I had the opportunity to ride this 74 Norton Commando with right side shift and a gear pattern of one up and 3 down! Now I know why these bikes are famous, they are really fun to ride. :ride:

Wow Ed! If you keep getting to ride all those special motorcycles they may have a hard time getting you to return home. Very Interesting with the gear pattern. Did you get used to it quickly enough? Keep on enjoying yourself.

Thanks Lil! I finally made it home with lots of fond and not so fond memories, in other words it was a fine adventure.
On the subject of getting used to the shifting on the Norton, not only is the pattern screwy but it's on the wrong side of the bike but for some reason I was able to adapt to it very quickly. I'm not sure why but it seemed to be a fine system.
Oh and it was the first bike I ever kick started. That is no easy task on a 36 year old bike! After I got it started with some sweat and huffing and puffing, I knelt down and kissed the starter on the v!

Aaaahh! That little switch is a beauty, isn't it!
So was that along a similar line of thinking as a suicide shift, side wise anyway/

My host did own a suicide shift bike, it's a 1947 Harley Knuckle Head but wouldnt let me ride that one. In fact I was boldly hinting at him but he wouldnt go for it. I was honored enough by his invitation to ride the other three.

Wow Very Cool Trip Ed you took us on ! Sorry I was not able to cruise up and see you there ! I remember the older bikes too in my days and starting my Brothers 1966, 650 truimph and riding my bike all day. Only takes twice of hitting the back brake instead of shifter and then you shift okay the rest of the day.

Jeff I think you are the master of machines and you know how to handle them well! See you next time I hope!

Luna you have quite a bit of motorcycle experience under your belt! It was so fun to ride that I might consider buying one. They are fairly reasonable.
