Do you use them still? Why? When?

Having a good investment in equipment it kills me seeing it sit unused. The local camera shops do not even want to clean an SLR anymore. The convenience and costs associated with digital imaging make it all too attractive. For the amateur is there reason to still use film?

Unfortunately, they are gathering dust, right next to my 8-tracks and my tape players and my tube TVs. :(

I still use my film camera. I think I get better pics. I also may start using my old school SLR from one of my photography classes. It's more rewarding when you don't have an automatic camera.

I still use a film camera on occasion, but I prefer my Nikon D40 to my Miranda Sensorex II LOL.

Hmmmmmmm...choices choices.....

I also have one of these: But I haven't used it yet. I just acquired it from my dad. Anyone have experience with one?

Everything on it seems to work, but I have NO experience with a TLR.

The other thing, is that I love HDR and I can't do that with film.

I really want to use it, it is just a bit of an intimidating camera. And film is tough to find for it. I think the TLR and medium format would create a pretty nostalgic photo though. Tude, have you used a TLR before?

The concern I have about film these days is trying to find a place that will develop and print according to my wishes. Gone is the day of having a guy work the processing or exposures a bit for you. It is all mechanized with no chance of human eyes watching over the process. The closest local guy here doesn't want to be bothered anymore. All his pro customers are using digital.

Nope not yet but am betting it would open up a new door of possibilities..
Part of me still embraces the art aspect of photography and as in the case of my father in law that is clueless about ram and pixels.
I spent hours last trip down looking at his work from the 50's up and am amazed at what can be done with a vintage cam and a little imagination, like shooting thru a toilet paper roll for vignette.
I would love to shoot a bike event (maybe Sturgis) in B/W film using a Leica bet it would be awesome to try with a TLR as well.

I still shoot Fuji Provia slide film on ocassion, bring it to Walmart and they will send it out to Fuji for developing. Bring it home scan and print. A good printer isn't that expensive anymore. both of these pix Fuji slide

Many years ago I used one of those in a high school class. It's so long ago that I cant remember but a fraction of what I did know about it. Really I dont remember anything about it except looking through the top of it and I think it takes 120mm film.

This is a manual for it but I'm not sure if it's exactly for your model or not but it should help.

I have the manual with mine, and I have read it. There are some strange operations with that camera. Ill get around to shooting with it one day. :O)

And yes EZE, it does take 120mm film.

Yes I use my film cameras alot on average and take family pictures and at home and trips or parties. The film does a great shot and walmart does agood deal on printing pictures and can blow them up. Not easy to carry on bike so then I use my nikon L 18 8mp and put it in my pocket.

I still treasure the F2A my wife gave me in 1976, but we don't even have a camera shop around here any more. One of the reasons I got my D 700 was to use all my old lenses, especially my 1000 mm f11 MR. All the other lenses are programed in to as well, except my old 200 mm 1:4.

Watch out JR, Lil's got a weakness for long lenses. You need to post a couple pictures of this 1000 mm lens for us, I'd like to see it for sure.

BTW Lil, I purchased another Sigma tele last night, this one is 120-400 mm with IS, and its .6 lbs lighter than Bigma was. Its a new lens from Sigma and this vendor www.photo4less.com has some killer pricing I mean. If anybody's looking to purchase a new lens, take a look. I got this new Sigma for $699 + shipping, retail is $1300+. Lil, you need to go take a look see, you know you need that 400 or 500 mm tele.

Unfortunately my film cameras are becoming more show pieces than photo devices. I made the switch to digital when my Canon A1 failed to advance the film and the local shop said it wasnt worth to fix (personally I still beg to differ).

Anyway, I do have a couple cameras that get a little usage still. These pictures arnt my own, taken from camerapedia.

That would be the Graflex Graphic 35... (very unique focusing unit)
http://www.graflex.org/graphic-35/barjas-35.jpg

And another fun one, the Kodak Pocket No. 1 Series II... Getting 120 film isn't the easiest.

Kris, how long have you been doing this?

Using the old cameras? About a 3 years. I found the graflex along with quite a few other old cameras in a box that someone was throwing out, have tested most of em out, and most were surprisingly functional.

The Kodak is a real treat, but I haven't taken any pictures with it in at least a couple years because since I no longer know anyone that can process them for me. Guess it may be time to learn.

Do you play around with any old cameras at all?

http://www.moviephotoforums.com/photopost/data/500/medium/camera_003.jpg The camera I have fun with and great focus. Digital cameras have hard time getting a real fine focus at close up shots and you can see it clearly for my nikon L 18 taking picture of my 35mm pentax camera with lens and also have flash unit too. Will shoot my 35mm this weekend and post a few to see it .
