Anyone got any advice on a not too expensive ($200+/-) digital camera that can somewhat easily fit in your pocket?

I love the quality of pictures my Sony DSC-H1 takes but it's pretty much impossible to fit in my pocket.

And I'm guessing it would have to be another Sony, I have a collection of Sony memory stick pro duo's and I'd like to keep them.

Vic these days you will find a dozen or so camera's that fit the description. Key things to look for is still the size of the glass. Even on a point and shoot pocket camera the bigger the opening usually the better the quality will be because it allows more light.

While you own a lot of sony memory don't buy a camera based on that. You can get SD and CF memory dirt cheap now so buying a camera just because you already have memory for it wouldn't make sense. You can now get SD upto 32gb also. :)

It's been a long time since I've actually looked at cameras, I guess I should go look what is available these days.

so, a bigger size screen is a plus. What other things should one look for when buying a camera. Is the mega pixels the most important thing to getting a good quality photo?

Not screen, bigger lens. The size of the lens makes a big difference. Like I say the bigger the lens the more light it can let in, that means better low light photos. All of them seem to work well in the bright sunlight but getting one that takes pictures without flash in normal lighting is a real plus IMHO.

That makes since. I've got an old "elf" that I took to a few bike rally's and took pictures at night and the pictures were pretty much worthless but in the daylight it took great pictures. My sony and I have an old 35mm Cannon with a HUGE lens on it and it takes great pictures at night.

I'm guessing I'll probably have to find a happy medium on big lense but small camera.

Not real small but I do carry it in my pocket and love it, the new canon G9, 12mp images and takes video to 1024x768 at 15fps but 640x480 at 30fps all day long. Writes to SD so getting cards 32gb is possible. THis thing takes some amazing photos for a point and shoot. But has a lot of great features for anyone that likes to play.

If I were to buy new today I would consider nothing less then 10 and in one year 20mp cameras will be the hot ticket. They are just gaining knowledge on how to build them that much better that fast.

Wow great colors....How does it perform in less than sunshine levels of light?

Works very well in low light. It has a fairly large lens on it and the cmos is actually the same as what you will find on some of Canon's digital SLR's.

I have this Sony DSC-U30...it's very small, will easily fit into a pocket anywhere. Features include 2.0 megapixel effective resolution, Fast Start up, 1.0 Reflective LCD Monitor, Memory Stick Pro compatible and selectable pic size. Down side is the 2.0 megapixel resolution. Doesn't do well for situations where you need an optical zoom feature. Does record video but not audio. I keep it at work for misc picture taking around the office and parking lot. Never know when I'll see a cool looking bike!

I'm looking for something similar like Vic...my camera was in my bag when it was stolen out of my rental car in San Antonio.

So, what you're saying Max, is that something with a bigger lens and over 10MP is what to look for. I assume that brand name is not necessarily something that needs to be taken into consideration??

I ran a Nikon Coolpix 200 all last year and was pretty happy with it. It had reasonable performance in good light but suffered in low light and no camera flash in that size range is going to throw enough lumens to make anything other that a bright, shiny object amongst a sea of shadow.

What I like about it was the size....I wanted a camera that would easily fit in my motorcycle jacket with little effort. It easily did that being only roughly the size of a pack of playing cards. With a reasonable SD card it can take thousands of pics.

Look for a camera with the greatest optical zoom in this form factor. More important than usual is the small end of the lens. Most camera's in this form factor are not suited for close up shots. The macro function is electronic.

Astoundingly, it did fairly well on astro-photography once I hacked it's "shutter timer"

Just my 2 cents.

I've been through 6 camera's in the last year and the Canon SD870 IS is the best camera that I have used and it is really small for an 8mp camera and easily fits into a shirt pocket.

That looks to be a good size. Every time I'm out and about I think I'm going to stop in the camera store but I always end up doing something else :o

Canons and nikons even on the compact cameras seem to yield some very good shots.

How many seconds does it take from when you push the button until it snaps the picture?
And how many seconds after that until you can snap another picture?
