I believe that the TIFF format allows you to archive in a lossless medium that can be accessed by a large number of software programs. Even the largest JPEG changes the raw data from the camera.

Would you recommend converting TIFF files to JPEG for casual emailing and other sorts of non-critical work and saving the TIFF as archival?

That's what I do.

That's what I do.

The thing that bothers me about shooting in TIFF with the 5700 is the hour glass after every shot. I feel as if it is indicating to me a time within which I can do anything and everything wrong to mess up the shot just taken. :p

The Digital SLRs are very fast in their data transfer. Most can shoot 3 or more frames per second at full resolution. Many have a raw format available that is purely what the camera outputs. I guess it all comes down to how fast your camera can handle data. It would not be practical to shoot in a tiff format if each photo takes more than a few seconds to process. The TIFF format is owned by Adobe, hence it's popularity. If you can, and are worried about archiving photos in a lossless format, TIFF is a good option, otherwise, the full resolution JPEGs offer a good compromise. I seldom take a picture in the raw or TIFF formats.

The slowness of processing on my camera is why I rarely use TIFF. Some recent pictures were taken in TIFF more as an experiment than anything else.

A faster card will help some

This is the card that is normally in the camera: SanDisk Standard CompactFlash® Card 512MB SDCFB-512-A10. Do you recommend something else?

I don't know that one brand is better than another, but there are some 60x cards out there which would make a pretty significant difference. Heck, there's even 133x cards out there!

I've always looked for type I and II CF cards because of compatibility with the 5700. Do you use any of the high speed cards you mentioned?
