What cards do you like the best?
I've been using the SanDisk 512 MB Compact Flash.
Amazon has some tremendous deals on them periodically and that is when I buy.

I know there are differences in cards some more expensive cards are designed just for digital cameras. Read/Write times are much faster giving you better pics and faster transfer rates when your uploading to your computer. I have an SD card that folds in half exposing a USB connector so you dont need a reader. Sandisk is a good name.
Here is an example of a good one.

What are the current limitations on cameras these days. My Nikon Coolpix 5700 cannot use some of the latest and greatest.

Lil each camera is different, it has a lot to do with the bios on the camera. Many have updates that you can flash on them to allow bigger cards but many of the camera's have limits on how much they can read so if you put in say an 8 gb card it may read the same as a 4gb card. Most of my cameras are new enough they read up to 16gb on most cards. I use what ever is cheap and fast. THe local frys has good prices on patriot memory cards usually. Today they have a 16 gb sd 233x speed for $55 which is a decent price.

I use the Lexar Professional series, and some of the SanDisk cards with fast write speeds. I only have two gig cards so far. I would like to eventually get a new camera and bigger cards.

Lil, as you probably already know, I use the same Coolpix 5700 as you. Nikon hasn't released a firmware update for it since v. 1.1 back in 2001. Your best bet - assuming you want to continue using your 5700 - is to get a couple of high-speed 1GB cards to swap out in the event one fills up.
Admittedly, I use a 512MB card which I've never yet come close to filling.

Thanks for saving me the research time and effort.
I do intend to keep using this camera and like you am using a 512MB card. Having formatted it a few times I was thinking that I might have a backup. Along with just a good FYI for our members that was my motivation for inquiring.

WOW! Never filled a 512 card! Wish i could do that. Must make processing minimal tho. I usually fill at least two 2gb cards when I shoot and always have an extra 1gb and 2gb card with me just in case. Bad part is when I get home I have to process 1000 plus pictures!

Mike,
What settings do you use to store the images?

I hope that my previous wasn't taken as offensive. Wasn't meant to be.

I use the large setting. My camera is only 6.1 megapixels. I can only imagine if I switched to shooting RAW and got a newer camera.

I like to shoot with what is called the FINE setting on the Nikon. It is the last step before RAW. It takes a while to process and uses up a good deal of space on the 512. I love the look though.

Oh.. in no way was I offended. I seriously do not take photography seriously! LOL.
I'm more of a "chance" photographer. I take a picture there's a "chance" it might turn out to be good! :D That doesn't happen very often, though.
