My depth of detail never seems to come out anywhere near as good as well, let's say, this master (http://lordv.smugmug.com/popular/#120917883_hsJdE), that tude/Mike shared with us. The detail they accomplish is deep within the image.

Well, there is a technique called focus or photo stacking that allows a composite image to be built from multiple exposures. A series of photographs is made with a different plane of focus in each. The resulting images are then layered upon each other utilizing the "in focus" section of each to build a detailed composite photograph.

Simple stacks can be 4 or 5 or 10 or 20. More elaborate composites may be made from over 100 separate images. Some people use sophisticated software and others do it by hand using standard components of Photoshop. I would imagine only those stacks with a relatively small number of images are done without specific stacking software.

So in a nutshell that is how they do it. This LordV Macro image (http://www.flickr.com/photos/46301298@N00/1334371934) is the result of a 5 shot focus stack.

Google photo or focus stack(ing) to see what the world a super macro images is all about.

Lil~ Oh THANKS! something else I have to learn. ;) Really Great. My new Aperture program has something about 'stacking photos'? I wonder if this is what it is about? :) I'd be curious as to what lens was used here? :)

J. R., Based upon information on his smugmug pages (http://lordv.smugmug.com/gallery/2285589) I'm thinking he uses a Canon MPE-65.

I'm just glad you turned me on to the term a while ago in a thread on my white lily photography meanderings. It gave me a small sense of relief from the pressure of using one photograph to get that much depth of detail.
