Backpack

Pros: Ease of carrying heavier loads, accommodates laptop, contemporary or the thing these days
Cons: Access to gear is challenging

Classic Bag

Pros: Easy access, old-school style
Cons: Pain can eventually set in carrying heavier loads, messenger or briefcase bags style may accommodate laptop whereas most box style do not

Anyone care to add more to the Pros/Cons lists for either or each?

I dont really mind the new styles or at least I'm willing to tolerate them due to ever evolving ergonomics and dual uses. My backpack style bag easily coverts to a carry bag by providing pockets for unused straps. It also has a way to cross the straps for even weight distribution.

It's also worth noting the intended use. Will it be used for protection while packed away in a car trunk or will it be also used for trekking all day at events and or nature hikes.

These are good questions to ask ones self before deciding which way to go.

Well, I am not getting out right now, but I now use two. The larger holding the 17" laptop and extra gear, keeping it all in one place. Day pack being the mini Trekker, does nicely for a round about or hike. If flying, the Mini will be emptied, and packed away in checked luggage until arrival. On another note, the mini has a Carabiner Clip on the handle I can snap a camera strap to to take the weight off my neck. This works really well for me. :)

I use a CLASSIC style shoulder bag and my days of carrying 20+ lbs of gear are a thing of the past.
