My new backpack arrived today from Hong Kong. :) At last- I needed something that would hold my 17" Mac Pro Book, along with some extra gear. Bags for 17" laptops hard a somewhat hard find, but easier than they were two years ago. Nikonians offered a nice one, but they skimped and it was about 1" too small. This is a Lowepro CompuTrekker Plus AW . PLENTY of room for the laptop and other gear, such as a Couple bodies and several lenses and other odds & ends. My Mini Trekker that I have been using for a few years still serves me quite well, and will for many years to come, but I needed an additional bag for flying and longer road trips. This bag will more than serve my needs and should anyone be looking for a like item, you may wish to check it out. Will hold Mono Pod, and tripod as well. Can even add some rain gear, and the bag has a rain cover included. They make the same bag for a 15" computer as well. Nunber is LP34705-PEF, if you have any interest. Price was less than half any NY listing I could find, even when shipping was added. :)

Great JR. Let us know how it performs in the real world. Should be fine for your Alaska trip if I remember correctly.
Is this the one (http://products.lowepro.com/product/CompuTrekker-Plus-AW,1925,16.htm) you have?

Good to know J.R. I am running into the same problem. I have a17 inch HP laptop and the majority of the bags will only accomodate the 15 inch laptops. I will look into this. Safe travels...

When Moto traveling I carry an IBM thinkpad wrapped in a microfiber towel then into a 2 gallon zip lock freezer bag. I cushion it even further by putting it into my MotoFizz between my tent and sleeping bag. Simple but it works well.
My camera is in small hard leather case that I keep in my tankbag. I have a waterproof bag that I can slip it into if necessary.

Ed, that one looks like it could hold our tripods. Your thoughts?

Well I'm sure the tripod would be able to be attached securely but with a lap top, camera and a few lens the bag would probably weigh over 20 lbs making it a challenge to carry comfortably. If you can handle that weight it should work out well, if not I think this (http://products.lowepro.com/product/Rolling-CompuTrekker-Plus-AW,2023,17.htm) might be a better solution unless your going to be taking your equipment down off road paths.

EZ~ Sure is, but I paid quite a bit less. By a little over a C note. :) My Alaska trip was put on hold as I need to have them look at my back. It seems right now, that amount of driving is out of the question-- so the doctors are saying. :( The other bag is nice, but much more than I need. Weight isn't a problem. I have my Mini Trekker for the hikes. :)

My issue is comfortably and safely walking around with the camera and tripod. I'll have to way the backpack loaded up to see what I'm lugging around.....

as you can is it is very little.
and when weight & space is of no concern I have a Slik tripod
Lil you may want to look at one of these
Gorillapod (http://joby.com/gorillapod)
I have been told to avoid the smaller ones they can not support the weight of more than a point and shoot.

Thanks LT. Your set up looks well thought out. I love the fact that you use your Dad's tripod. Connections like that are very good.
the Gorillapod looks handy, but my needs for a tripod are attached to using this sort of beast.

J. R., you went with the Plus version of this bag over the AW. Had you given any thought to the AW? It seems to be big enough for me. If I carry a laptop it is a MacBook Air.

Lil~ I had no interest in a AIR BOOK because of the lack of firewire. Even so, they were not out when I got my MAC PRO-- Well yeah, it is a AW PLUS. My 1000 & 500 MR lenses take up a lot of room as would a 600 AF VR if I ever was to get my hands on one. :D

J. R., I use the Air for back and forth to work and travel. The Pro stays home.
So, I should be fine with the AW and not the plus. I carry the 50D, 70-300mm, 17-85MM and the 100-400mm. Add to that some cards, batteries, cleaning cloths, cleaning solution, camera manual, and papers with photo notes and pearls.
